day 3
On the way to the temple town of Dambulla we saw the 38-meter (!) tall Buddha statue. The larger-than-life, usually reclining Buddha statues and the colorful ceiling paintings in the caves of the golden cave temple today testify to a highly developed culture.
After Dambulla we continued our trip to a guided tour in the Kandalama hotel. This hotel was built by Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka‘s most famous architect. At Heritance Kandalama Bawa created a modern and minimalism building that derives its beauty from the surrounding landscape. The simple geometry and lack of decoration help to highlight the natural environment.
